Course Outline
Day 1: Cloud Foundations and Core Services
Section I: Cloud Architecture Fundamentals
- Core cloud architecture principles and non-functional requirements, such as availability, scalability, security, and performance
- Cloud adoption models and associated trade-offs, including IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and the shared responsibility model
- Key Azure architecture components, including Regions, Resource Groups, and individual Resources
- Mission-critical architecture design and disaster recovery targets, specifically RTO and RPO
Section II: Essential Cloud Services
- Storage and data foundations, focusing on Azure Table Storage and Azure Cosmos DB
- Compute and container platforms, covering Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and Azure Container Registry (ACR)
- Relational data management and messaging, utilizing Azure SQL Database and Azure Service Bus
- Practical exercises for each service, involving configuration, deployment, and evaluation against criteria like availability, performance, security, and pricing
- Implementing Infrastructure as Code using Bicep to ensure reproducible environments
Day 2: Architectural Leadership and Clean Architecture
Section III: The Role of the Architect
- Defining software architecture and understanding different architectural viewpoints
- Exploring the roles, responsibilities, and decision-making ownership of a software architect
- Specifications of architecture and effective communication with both technical and business stakeholders
- A practical roadmap for becoming an effective software architect
Section IV: Managing Dependencies in Monolithic Systems
- Principles of Clean Architecture, including separation of concerns, dependency direction, and maintaining code quality
- Selecting appropriate cloud services for monolithic modernisation, analysing the advantages and disadvantages
- Hands-on lab: developing and deploying a Clean Architecture solution on Azure using .NET
Day 3: Domain-Driven and Distributed Architectures
Section V: DDD, CQRS, and Event Sourcing
- Foundations of Domain-Driven Design, covering domain boundaries, ubiquitous language, and model-driven design
- Concepts of CQRS and Event Sourcing for managing complex, evolving business domains
- Architectural patterns commonly used in DDD-based cloud solutions
- Hands-on lab: applying Event Sourcing as a requirements-driven design technique, moving from requirements to events, aggregates, and event flows
Section VI: Microservices
- Principles of microservices architecture and the trade-offs inherent in distributed systems
- Choosing cloud services for microservices-based solutions, considering pros and cons
- Synchronous and asynchronous communication styles in microservices, including reliability patterns like circuit breakers and resiliency strategies
- Ensuring testability in microservices and CI/CD pipelines through contract testing, integration testing boundaries, automated quality gates, and deployment confidence
- Hands-on lab: building and deploying microservices on Azure using .NET
Requirements
- Proficiency in an advanced programming language, such as C# or Java
- Basic understanding of the architectural styles covered in the course
- Foundational experience working with cloud services
- A minimum of five years in software engineering roles
