Training Skills

  • Delivery of a pre-prepared training session on a work-related topic of the participant’s choice.

N.B. The duration of each participant’s training session will depend on the course length and the number of attendees. A group size of eight is ideal.

  • Comprehensive one-on-one and group feedback

Preparing a Training Session

  • Key questions the trainer should ask in advance:
    • Why am I the right person for this?
    • Logistics: what, where, when, how – and for how long?
    • Understanding how the answers to these questions influence the structure of the training
  • Structuring the content:
    • Research – mastering the subject matter
    • Organizing the content logically
    • Creating and utilizing complementary visual aids

Preparing the Trainer

  • The three fundamental communication tools for a trainer:
    • Verbal – the words used, avoiding slang and jargon
    • Vocal – the tone of voice, avoiding distracting verbal tics and unnecessary pauses
    • Visual – the presenter's appearance: attire, body language, and presence
  • Rehearsing the session – and obtaining honest feedback from a reliable source
  • Managing nerves

Preparing the Environment

  • Room layouts – and how they send underlying messages to attendees
  • Leveraging the room to enhance the training experience
  • ...and tidying up after the course

Evaluation

  • The importance of evaluation
  • Processes for obtaining and utilizing participant feedback

Training Skills – Revisited

  • Delivery of another training session (after suitable preparation time).

N.B. This may be the same presentation as in Module 1, revised based on detailed feedback
